Religion as Conspiracy Theory / How we detect design

From a post on sci.physics.relativity :

Some people made up some ideas.
Then others who didn't quite like those ideas either modified them or
made up some of their own.
Everyone was more or less content having an intangible, unprovable
entity to answer all of the questions that their current knowledge
didn't extend to.

It's the same logic as conspiracy theory...most people just get
_really_ freaked out at the suggestion that there is no plan, there is
no 'higher order,' and that there is not something or someone behind
the scenes controlling it all. So in the absence of such a plan etc.,
they are more comfortable inventing one than confronting the truth. The
more manipulative (whether naturally or made manipulative through
gullibility) people in this chunk will use these insecurities to
convert others into their 'belief system.' And organized religion was
born.

Another great article - "An Account of How We Detect Design", by Mark Frank. The examples are kinda long, so I won't paste them here, but this should be obligatory reading for any Creationist.

It was a hot day in July, and little Bobby decided to open a lemonade stand. There were plenty of passers-by, so Bobby made lots of money. Billy lived across the street, and he was jealous of Bobby's success. He opened his own lemonade stand. Now people didn't have to cross the street to go to Bobby's, so they both made money. This wasn't good enough for Billy though, so he started spreading rumors that Bobby's lemonade was impure. Bobby fought back, and soon, customers were arguing in the street, some loyal to Billy, and some loyal to Bobby. Eventually, the Coca-cola company noticed this neighborhood where nobody was buying coke. They put some nasty furniture polish into a bottle, called it lemonade, and had Britney Spears balance it on her breasts. Then, they had the Board of Health close down Billy and Bobby.

That's religion in a nutshell, except substitute fear mongering apocalyptic bullshit for lemonade.

To put it another way, the explanation as proffered leaves out the incentive for making up this crap in the first place, revising it in the second place, and promoting it all over the place.
