Why does the changing of a year warrant a celebration? What's so exciting about the changing of a year? Why do people care?

People need milestones in their life. This can be said about any holiday really, birthday, anniversarys, new years, Christmas, Valentine's Day.

Holidays help break up the monotony of life. We don't need them, but it certainly helps.
